Isabella Chen

Every brushstroke is a negotiation between intention and accident. I want the painting to feel like it is still breathing.

Born in Taipei and raised between London and New York, Isabella Chen brings a restless energy to her large-scale canvases. She studied fine art at the Royal Academy before completing her MFA at Columbia. Her practice centres on the tension between Eastern calligraphic traditions and Western gestural abstraction - brushstrokes that hover between legibility and pure movement. Her work has been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, Frieze London, and Art Basel Hong Kong. Isabella currently lives and works in a converted warehouse in Hackney, where she paints on unstretched linen pinned directly to the studio walls.
