Marcus Rivera

Sculpture is architecture freed from function. I build spaces you can walk around but never inhabit.

Marcus Rivera grew up in the Bronx surrounded by the raw materiality of an industrial neighbourhood - rusted fire escapes, crumbling concrete, the smell of welding sparks from his uncle's auto body shop. He studied architecture at Cooper Union before pivoting to sculpture, and that structural thinking still underpins every piece he makes. Working primarily in reclaimed steel and bronze, Marcus creates monumental forms that interrogate the politics of public space. His installations have been commissioned by the Whitney Museum, Storm King Art Center, and the City of Los Angeles. He was a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow.
