Mixed Media
Amara Okafor
My grandmother wove stories into fabric. I continue that work - the cloth remembers what the body forgets.
Amara Okafor's practice is rooted in the Yoruba textile traditions of her Nigerian heritage, but its reach is decidedly global. Working from her studio in Accra, she constructs large-scale mixed-media compositions from hand-dyed indigo cloth, found objects, gold leaf, and oil pigment. Her work addresses themes of migration, memory, and the body as archive. Each piece is both a painting and a sculpture, demanding to be read from multiple distances and angles. Amara was the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town and has exhibited at Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and Tate Modern.
